Grow Your Own Potatoes

Potatoes are one of my favorite foods. Today I learned that I can plant and grow potatoes in a bushel basket. I always thought I had to have a big garden with lots of space to grow potatoes.  Two potatoes plants can grow nicely in a bushel basket at about eight inches deep. Potatoes generally like cold so it’s good to plant them early in the year by February. It’s a little late this year as it’a already April.

This might be a fun project to use up some old potatoes next year. I bet Lady Bug would really get a kick out of growing her own potatoes. She loves to eat them already. With potatoes she grew on her own I can be certain that she would he eat tons more.

The Right Way to Remove Weeds

So, I mentioned before that the weeds in the corner of my backyard are just so darn stubborn and won’t go away.  I did a little bit of research an this is what I’ve learned about weed removal.

I’ve been pulling the weeds up out of the ground.  I’ve always been told to make sure I get the roots out; that’s why I pull the weeds. Well, just pulling the weeds out might not be enough.  Apparently some weeds have a really long or a large cluster or roots.  If I just pull them up I might break them and leave a bunch of the roots behind.  This will cause them to grow back.  To make sure I get all of the roots out a good solution is to use a spade and dig the entire root base out of the ground.

I guess I’ve been doing it wrong all these years.  I had no idea at all.  I now have a project for the rest of the weekend.  Hopefully I manage to get all of the roots out and I’ll have a weed free backyard in no time.

Gorgeous Metal Accents in the Living Room and Kitchen

Recently, I’ve noticed a trend of using metal tiles to accent your home in decorating.  The use of metal in the kitchen is nothing new.  Many people have stainless steel appliances throughout their homes.  I’m particularly fond of the way stainless steel looks in a kitchen.  I like how it looks sharp, clean and cool.  For some reason it makes me think things are sterile in a place where I know that’s important.

Decorating with metal in the kitchen seems familiar to me.  However, decorating with large metal statement pieces in other parts of the home is a new idea to me.  A fireplace covered in stainless steel tiles is eye catching and very breath taking. These tiles aren’t necessarily all perfect square 2″ x 2″ squares either.  There are tiles manufactured to look like cobblestones, circles, hexagons, bricks and even mosaics.  There really are a lot of choices to from.

My kitchen has stainless steel appliances, so I’m no stranger this type of accent in my home. However, I’ve never thought to add metal pieces of accents to other rooms in my home.  Maybe this will be a project I might pursue in the future.

Pesky Weeds Just Won’t Go Away

The weeds in my back yard are really frustrating me.  There is a corner in the back that I just can’t seem to get a handle on.  I’ve tried pulling them, spraying them, you name it I’ve done it.  I’m at a loss as for what to do to get rid of them.  I’d like my lawn to be free of weeds but I’m almost at the point of giving up.

I guess now is the time for me to either do a bunch more research on weed control or call out the big guys to see what they can suggest.  I wonder if I can get a consultation and see if they can give me some advice.  I might be better off just having them rip everything out and starting over.  Renovating the back yard could be a fun project.
