Sometimes I wish my daughter didn’t have carpet in her room. She’s usually very clean and careful with things in her room. However, she does have the occasional accident and messes are made. This afternoon I found a big giant mess when I walked into her bedroom.
Apparently she decided that she wanted to have a garden in her room. She had a bucket full of dirt that she had collected from the backyard and she had picked a variety of flowers from the garden. She was in the middle of planting her garden in the carpet when I found her. She did a very nice job of grinding the dirt into the carpet as she piled it into mounds to plant the flowers. It was cute but cleaning this mess up was not something I was looking forward to. I didn’t panic though because I remembered some tips that my sister had given me when she looked up carpet cleaning when her four year old son decided to make mud pies in the house one day.
I scooped up the big debris the best I could and then vacuumed. She really ground the dirt in so I now have a big brown spot on the carpet where she planted her garden. I feel like being lazy though after a long week I’ve had so, I’m going to call the carpet cleaning guys in the morning. Hopefully, the stain will come out.
Lady Bug is getting bigger and is always wanting to help out around the house. I’ve decided to designate a few things for her to do around the house that she will always be responsible for. Currently, she always asks to help set the table. I get the items she’ll need out of the cabinets and set them on the counter and she puts them in the appropriate places on the table. She also helps clear the table off when we are done eating.
Another chore that I’m working with her on is emptying the bathroom trash cans. The one in the kitchen is a little too big for her so we are starting with the smaller one. Right now they are the size of a grocery bag so she can handle them with ease. They need to be emptied every couple of days. In addition to the bathroom trash, she also wipes off the bathroom counters at the end of the night after we brush our teeth with a paper towel and then every other day with a disinfecting wipe. She is always supervised when using the wipes.
We are keeping track of the household chores she does with a sticker chart. She’s really excited about cleaning and helping around the house.
So I’m not really the biggest fan of doing all of the work that it takes to clean my kitchen. Don’t get me wrong, my kitchen isn’t a big mess. The reason why it isn’t a big disaster is because I do a little bit of work every day to keep it looking nice. Every day before I go to bed I make sure to wipe down the counter tops, stove, and sink. I also run a swiffer over the floor to pick up and dirt. All of this takes me maybe five minutes tops.
This five minutes of daily maintenance cleaning really makes a huge difference in my kitchen. I know if I didn’t do this daily my stove would be atrocious looking. I’m positive that food would build up around the burners and then I would have to take a chisel to it at least once a month to get it off. This chiseling image is exactly why I always take the extra few minutes before bed to wipe everything down.
