Wednesday is My TV Night

Posted on

There are not many shows on TV that I make a big effort to watch. Usually I leave the TV off and just watch one or two shows each week that interest me. I would rather have music playing in the house than the canned laughter from all those awful sitcoms. And I don’t want my daughter watching a lot of mindless junk, either.

But tonight is the night I do want to watch TV. The second season of Harry’s Law is on a different night from the first season, but I love that show and will try to remember to watch it on Wednesday nights now.

Nanny Interviews

Posted on

A co-worker of mine told me to check online and the newspaper classified to find someone to take care of my daughter while I go on my trip next month.  Well I found two promising candidates that I plan to interview this week.

The first one is an early childhood education major at the state university.  She said she has experience working at a daycare and loves children.  I’ve already called her references and they seem to be great.  The daycare staff informed me that she has a really sweet personality and that the kids always loved her.

The second person I’m considering to care for my daughter is a retired teacher.  She’s in her 60′s but insists that she feels like she is in her 30′s.  I hope this is true because my kiddo sure has a lot of energy and I want to make sure she can keep up with her.  I’m still waiting for her to e-mail me her list of references.  I plan to contact them before I meet with her.

Hopefully one of these two will work out and I won’t have to bring her along with me and, she’ll have quality care here in our own home.

Looking for a Sitter

Posted on

Next month I have the opportunity to go to Orlando for a convention and I would really like to do that. The problem is finding a sitter. If I take her with me it will be impossible to personally check out any sitters referred by a service there. I have not found anyone here who is willing to babysit all weekend. So that is my challenge, and I only have until the 6th to book my flight or decide to not go.

My girlfriend, Vicki, has offered to keep my daughter, but she does not have any kids and I feel like I would be imposing on her. She doesn’t have any children’s toys at her house, she isn’t used to constantly watching a little one’s every move. I don’t know. I am thinking about asking Vicki to just go on the trip with us and she can act as a nanny while I’m busy, then after my meetings Vicki can have some fun of her own. But I’m going to keep trying to find someone right here that is qualified and has good references. If you know of anyone, please call me ASAP.

8 Interesting Facts About Foster Care

Posted on

Those who do not have direct contact with the foster care system often know little about it. Aside from its portrayal in certain TV programs, the foster care system is often all but forgotten by the general public. Here are 8 interesting facts about foster care that may just make you want to know more.

Most Children Stay In The System For About 3 Years

This figure changes over time but most children seem to stay within the foster care system for nearly 3 years before they return to their families of origin or are placed with new families. This is not always the case, however, as 20% of children don’t get out of the system until more than 5 years has gone by.

Children Have About 3 Different Placements On Average

This is just the average but even it is upsetting. Moving from one home to another puts great stress on children and 3 different homes on average is a tremendous amount of stress. There are children who are far above this average and who have been placed in 20 or 30 different homes.

Each Year 20,000 Children Never Leave The System

There are many children each year who never make it out of the foster care system. Instead, they remain in it until they are too old to qualify for foster care. Each year 20,000 children fall into this category as those who never get to leave the system.

30% Of The Homeless Have Been In Foster Care

This is an astounding fact that few realize. In America, 30% of the homeless have been in foster care before. Clearly, the parallel that is being drawn here is not a positive one and does not speak well of the state of the foster care system.

25% Of People In Prison Have Been In Foster Care

This is another indication that the foster care system may not adequately prepare individuals for the real world. It is true that 25% of those in prison have spent time in the foster care system. Figures like these do not happen by accident.

The Average Age Of Foster Children Is 10

It can be hard for many who do not have direct experience with the foster care system to conceptualize the situation or the children in the system but this should help. The average age of children in the foster care system is 10. This means that half of these children are either 10 years old or younger than that.

Social Workers Have A High Turnover Rate

Given the stress of this profession it is not surprising that there is a high turnover rate for social workers but the fact that this rate is over 20% is shocking. That’s extremely high for any profession. But dealing with the challenges hinted at by the above facts understandably can lead social workers to burnout.

Social Workers Have Too Many Cases

It probably doesn’t surprise you that social workers have too many cases. The usually recommended number of cases for a social worker is about 17. Many social workers have 3 or 4 times that many cases.

Time for a New Car Seat

Posted on

Car seats have expirations and limitations. They are almost like a consumable product or one time use in a way. If a car seat in an accident, it fulfilled it’s duty of protecting your child. It is no longer safe to use. There can be tiny stress fractures that you can’t see that void the integrity of the seat.

Well, my daughter’s car seat has seen it’s glory days. Because it was in the accident we have to replace it. Luckily, the insurance company is paying to replace it.

We are going car seat shopping today. My neighbor has a child about the same size as my daughter. She is driving us to the store and the kiddo will sit in her son’s car seat.

I love the car seat we had and plan to get another one exactly like it. It’s easy to install and has great safety ratings. I did a ton of research before buying it the first time. I did a bit more last night and am pleased to say that our model is still my top choice even with newer models on the market.
