FINALLY finished the kitchen

Posted on

Boy that was a bigger job than I thought it would be.  The kitchen cabinets were filthy and I didn’t realize they were that bad.  I had to scrub them three times before they came clean.  Did I end up painting them, you bet.  I’m not going through all of that again.  I painted them white so I can tell when they get dirty now.

The kitchen looks about twice as big as it did before too.  With the wallpaper and everything else painted white, it looks wonderful.  I might put new handles and knobs on the drawers later but for now, these are fine.  My grandmother found some curtains that look great with my new wallpaper and got one for the window over the sink and one for the back door that has rod holders in each end so I can close them completely when it gets dark.  They really set the room off.

Well now the living room, bathroom and kitchen look great.  Next will be my bedroom since my grandmother did Michele’s room when we moved in.  Once I get my room done, it’s on to the outside of the house.  It will be warm enough to start that then.  I want a deck build at the door that goes out of the kitchen to the back yard.  Might even want sliding glass doors put in to really open up the kitchen.  We’ll have to see how much money I have before something like that can be done.  Hey, tax checks will be coming soon, sounds like a good thing for that.

Today…………the kitchen!!!

I have a rather small kitchen that’s almost square.  The back wall has a door that goes out to the back yard.  The other wall opposite that wall has a door in the middle of it that goes into the living room.  The one  wall has cabinets and the appliances on it that goes to each of the doors and the other is where the kitchen table is so there’s not really that much to wallpaper.  In both of the corners of the wall where the table is has  built in corner china cabinets that I love.  Behind the counter tops up to the bottom of the cabinets, there’s the stuff like is on the counter tops so I won’t have to wallpaper at all on that wall in all reality except behind the refrigerator.

My uncle put up the ceiling fan for me so that’s already done.  I have paint to do the trim and the corner cabinets (since they were already painted before) and am even thinking about painting the other cabinets too.  They’re wood but are old and stained up something awful.  I’ll have to scrub them a lot before I decide if I’ll paint them or not.  They might look good once I clean them real good and maybe just a good coat of oil polish will fix them up.  We’ll have to see.  Well I better get to work if I’m going to get much done today.

The bathroom looks wonderful

I am so proud of how the bathroom turned out.  The ceramic tile on the floor looks wonderful.  I couldn’t have done it if it hadn’t been for my Uncle.  He is such a great help to me and never asks for anything in return except for a big hug and the bill is paid in full.  “That’s what family is for” he always says.

I went back to Lowe’s (which is quickly becoming my favorite store) and they had even more stuff marked down.  This time I bought a new shower curtain and matching window curtain for the bathroom and even got a new shelve unit for extra storage.  It was really easy to put together and now I have more room for towels and stuff like that.  I painted the walls to match the print in the new curtains too.

I am so proud of how it all turned out.  That’s the best part of doing things like that.  It gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment.  I’m making a beautiful home for my daughter and I and it feels great!!!

I wish you could see my bathroom floor

My uncle came over today and we worked out rear ends off.  Grandma kept Michelle while we put down the ceramic tile.  Tomorrow we have to put the grout in it.  I didn’t realize we had to take up the toilet and all of that to do it.  Thank goodness my uncle knew how to do all of this.

I didn’t have everything we needed to get the job completely done and my uncle went to Lowe’s and bought the back board (I think that’s what he called it), the cement stuff you use to put the tiles down with, the grout, and a new wax ring since we took the toilet up, you have to put a new one of those in.  Oh he even got some quarter round molding and spacers that are needed to make sure the tile are all spaced exactly the same.  Bless his heart he paid for all of it for me too.  I didn’t know I needed all of that too.

I don’t know what I was thinking because I’m usually a lot more thorough about things than that.  Well tomorrow the tile will be done too.  Oh yeah, there was a piece of wood that had to go where the tile meets the floor under the door since the tile is a bit higher than the other floor.  I’m planning on putting in the laminate floors in the hallway and other rooms and that will level them off with the bathroom tile then but until I find a good deal or it goes on sale, that piece was needed.  I don’t know what it’s called but if you have ever done anything like this, you know what I’m talking about.

Had the day off

Well I had the day off, Michelle was at school and I got the wallpaper put up in the living room.  Man did it make a huge difference too.  It looks great if I do say so myself.  It’s got peach and pink colored flowers in it and it’s not a large print either.  The background of it is sort of a creamy beige color.  The leaves and vines in it are several shades of sort of a mossy green.  It’s really pretty.  I’m thinking of going with the mossy green in the leaves for the bottom under the chair railing.  I think that would look real good.

I also went ahead and put up the ceiling fan myself.  It wasn’t that hard to get up there.  The whole living room looks so different.  You should have seen Michelle’s eyes when she came home.  She said ‘Mommy the living room looks so pretty.’  It was too cute.  Anyway I gotta start dinner now.  Back to work tomorrow.  Hey, this is the ceiling fan I got.  It goes great with the wallpaper.
