Recently, I’ve noticed a trend of using metal tiles to accent your home in decorating. The use of metal in the kitchen is nothing new. Many people have stainless steel appliances throughout their homes. I’m particularly fond of the way stainless steel looks in a kitchen. I like how it looks sharp, clean and cool. For some reason it makes me think things are sterile in a place where I know that’s important.
Decorating with metal in the kitchen seems familiar to me. However, decorating with large metal statement pieces in other parts of the home is a new idea to me. A fireplace covered in stainless steel tiles is eye catching and very breath taking. These tiles aren’t necessarily all perfect square 2″ x 2″ squares either. There are tiles manufactured to look like cobblestones, circles, hexagons, bricks and even mosaics. There really are a lot of choices to pick from.
My kitchen has stainless steel appliances, so I’m no stranger this type of accent in my home. However, I’ve never thought to add metal pieces of accents to other rooms in my home. Maybe this will be a project I might pursue in the future.
Lady Bug is getting bigger and is always wanting to help out around the house. I’ve decided to designate a few things for her to do around the house that she will always be responsible for. Currently, she always asks to help set the table. I get the items she’ll need out of the cabinets and set them on the counter and she puts them in the appropriate places on the table. She also helps clear the table off when we are done eating.
Another chore that I’m working with her on is emptying the bathroom trash cans. The one in the kitchen is a little too big for her so we are starting with the smaller one. Right now they are the size of a grocery bag so she can handle them with ease. They need to be emptied every couple of days. In addition to the bathroom trash, she also wipes off the bathroom counters at the end of the night after we brush our teeth with a paper towel and then every other day with a disinfecting wipe. She is always supervised when using the wipes.
We are keeping track of the household chores she does with a sticker chart. She’s really excited about cleaning and helping around the house.
It sounds kind of gross but it really is time for me to get a new waste bin. The poor thing looks like it’s seen better days. I have one big one outside that I fill up and bring down to the curb once a week. Well, actually I have two, one is for trash and the other is for recycling. The two outside are still in decent condition it’s the one I have indoors that needs some work.
I’d like to get the kind that can go under the cabinet. Maybe even something fancy that can roll out. I saw in a magazine the kind that has two waste bins on rollers. If I got something like that I could use one for recycling and the other for the trash. That would make it really easy as I empty the stuff in the the appropriate large bins outside. The thirteen gallon trash bin I have in my kitchen is just soo ugly and grimy looking that I would love to get something hidden away. I guess I’ll be on the lookout for something like this this weekend.
Last night I was watching a do-it-yourself show on the television. The guy on the show was showing you how to make a really neat padded storage ottoman. I love items that you can use to decorate with but also have a purpose like organizing. This ottoman was made with a plastic file crate, plywood, some batting and the fabric of your choice. It looked very easy to put together.
I would love to make a few of these to use in Lady Bug’s room. She can use the extra storage space for some of her board games. Because she is small they could double as seats. I bet she would want to fill them with her toys and call them her treasure boxes.
So the other day when I changed the batteries for the smoke detectors it got me thinking about other thing that contribute to home safety. I founds some very helpful tips online. I’m considering getting a home security system and there are a lot of different choices for monitoring your home and giving you peace of mind with alarm systems.
One company I found has three different pricing options, all of which seem to be pretty affordable ranging from $35.99 to $45.99 a month. These seem pretty reasonable when it comes to the safety of my family. One item that I was particularly fond of in one of the packages was an alarm that sounds when doors or windows are opened that are protected. I know this would put my mind at ease if all I had to do would be listen for an intruder alarm.
No matter what system I might choose to get, my family’s safety is my number one priority. I just want to make sure my daughter and I are both safe and secure.
