I’m volunteering this weekend

I’m volunteering this weekend at a local Disabled American Veterans Post.  They’re having Christmas Dinner for all the local veterans and the families of any deployed service peoples families.  This is the first year I have known about it or I would have been doing this all along.

See, my father and grandfather (who fought in Vietnam) were in the Marine Corps.  My great-grandfather was in the Army in the Korean Conflict.  It used to be called the Korean war and I’m not sure when they changed it to a conflict but that’s what it’s called now apparently.  If American soldiers are sent there to fight and died on foreign soil, then it’s not just a conflict I would think.

Anyway, they have treat bags they hand out to the children that has fruit, nuts and candy in them, there will be turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, yams, green beans, peas, gravy, dinner rolls, and of course, deserts.  It’s important to me to let these people know how much I appreciate what they did for us and this is just one small way I can do that.

Michele isn’t old enough to help so my grandmother is keeping her for me but as soon as she’s able to help, we’ll both be there to do whatever we can for them.  I want her to learn to help out others and appreciate our service men and women too.  It’s important to give back even the smallest amount to someone who has given so much to you and she needs to learn that.
